Hi, I’m Dexter
I’m a Canadian engineer and PhD candidate in Bioengineering at Imperial College London, where I study knee biomechanics and how to make total knee replacements more precise. My current work draws on my experience in mechatronics, orthopaedic biomechanics, and medical device design.
My background is in mechatronic systems engineering, where I earned my BASc and MASc at Simon Fraser University (SFU). During my time at SFU’s NeuroSpine Lab, I built computational models of spinal cord injury (SCI) to understand how different injury mechanisms translate into potential tissue damage, using neurosurgeon feedback to improve the design of a robotic SCI test platform. That work taught me the importance of surgeon feedback as a core engineering component of systems used in the operating room.
Today, that same perspective drives my current engineering research. Total knee replacement surgeries rely on proper balancing assessments, which largely rely on a surgeon’s feel and experience; judgments that are hard to measure, teach, and reproduce. I’m interested in how robotics, in vitro testing, and surgical instrument design can make those judgments more quantifiable.
I’m oriented towards translational biomedical engineering research that will ultimately improve patient care.
Outside the lab, I’m an avid language learner and music enthusiast, and I’m drawn to how stories told in their native language and music both carry things that get lost in translation.
